Wine Berries, Blueberries, sugar, oh my!…

Just thought I would share the latest in some of my baking adventures.  I set about to make a pie from a native wild berry. They’re called wine berries, or at least that’s what folks around here call them. Take a look.

Don’t be fooled, these berries may look big, but they are about the size of the tip of my pinky, generally.  I had managed to scrounge up about 2 cups with the help of a friend, they were on their last leg, and weather this season wasn’t very hospitable for them either.

2 cups of wine berries, 1 cup of blueberries and a single pie crust I’ve been trying to use up.. and I’ve got the workings of a pie (give or take a few ingredients).  Throw a little crumb topping on top and pop it in the oven and you’ve got this..

Looks pretty tasty huh.. the neighbors upstairs loved it, I thought it was okay, I’m finding I’m not much of a pie person, outside of apple pie. But it turned out well considering the fact that I winged it.

Don’t you wish you were my neighbors…

Gorgeous! The first time I ever heard of wine berries was when we moved to Waterford seven years ago. But I never knew their name until I think you told me they were called such. They grow wild along the side of our gravel road and usually get wiped out pretty quick. Would try your berry pie recipe if I could gather enough of ’em at one time!
