So since the past couple days have sort of felt like spring (minus the cold wind) here are 2 photos to continue the trend.
I like the comp of this shot with all the curves going on… I wish focus/exposure had been slightly better, but hey I shot this back in 2007 so I’ve learned a couple things since then. I need your opinions on the next two. Not quite sure if I should crop it or not. So here are two versions with slightly different compositions.
Above = Version 1 no crop
Below = Version 2, slight crop off top and side
Your thoughts? I don’t want to lose much of the bottom as it acts as a frame.. and to be honest I feel the crop on the second one leaves the flower a little less anchored, but more clean (the former I don’t like, but the latter I do). The second one also creates a better overall technically sound composition, but was the first all that bad to begin with?
What do you think?

Personally I prefer the closer crop too, but have you considered rotating the image a little bit first before you crop it… to bring the horizon line closer to horizontal… You may lose more than you’d want to from the fence though unfortunately…
Thanks for the opinion and suggestion. I may try that, you never know it may work. I wish I could just reshoot it, guess it’ll just be an image I learn from. I normally don’t like to center things like this so I know there was a reason for it that I couldn’t escape. Thanks for stopping by

Loving these flower shots. My favorite part of spring is wandering around my neighborhood and taking pictures of all the flowers growing in yards and on trees. I have blown up some of them on canvas and used them to decorate my living room. You took some really gorgeous photos! I kind of prefer the cropped one, as that extra leaf up top on the first one is a bit out of place. That’s just my two cents, both are pretty!
Thanks, seems there are a lot of flower shots so it’s nice to have people enjoy mine despite them being such a common photo subject. I have yet to frame any of my shots to hang in my own home. I need to. Seems most prefer the cropped shot, guess I will just have to go with my gut. Wish I could reshoot it. Thanks for stopping by and subscribing too!

Hi, Anna! Just popped over from Michaela’s blog. I like the second crop, too. The color and composition is more pleasing to my eye and holds more interest.
I am always preaching to get close and fill the frame. Sometimes that is not possible but in this case you could have. Keep that in mind the next time you are out and about.
Thanks for stopping by and the comment scott. I don’t think I could have gotten closer on this chosen bloom. I only had my kit lens back then and I do believe it was a ways up the branch. I usually do fill the frame and cropping is hard. Wish i could reshoot this one and change my angle a bit to get the best of both worlds. Thanks for the critique, they are always welcome.

I like the second crop better, too, but would crop just a little more off the top… maybe crop right at the top of that leaf that’s hanging down? (and crop off both sides) IMO the flower is a little too centered in the first one.
I actually like Version #1 more. That little bit of extra branch actually strengthens the composition,gives the eye a place to land with a little more heft:)
