Throwback Thursday: Lily of ’07 (love)

Well it’s thursday again, which means I get to dig into my archives for some photos.. And I feel like I just dug up some gems.. Enjoy

f/16 1/60 ISO 800

f/4 1/400 ISO 400

I love how these first two are almost the same, the biggest difference being the DOF (depth of field).  I like them both for different reasons, but I probably have to admit I like the second one slightly more as the DOF really simplifies the shot and really makes the focus clear.  Your thoughts?

I know nothing is clearly in focus in this, but I am enjoying the pure abstract nature of this one, composition and all.  Sometimes it’s fun to break the rules.

Who says the pistol and stamen have to have all the fun. I enjoy the petals too.

Some may be wondering why I included the (random) numbers at the bottom, this was mainly due to participating in this close up photo challenge.  I happened to see this blog earlier and then ran across these images when I was looking for a throwback and magic was made.  This is probably one of my favorite flower discoveries in a while, maybe I will even bother to print a couple and hang them (gasp).  Anyway all of these photos were taken outdoors with natural light, a tripod, and my Sigma 50mm macro lens.  Feel free to participate in the photo assignment. And critique, thoughts, opinions, ideas are always welcome about any of the photos.

Happy Throwback Thursday, sorry it’s a little late, maybe I was born to be in a different time zone?

These are gems. The colors are so *alive* and the softness in the unfocused areas add to the mystery of the bloom.

Your photos are so beautiful and artistic!

Thanks, I should dig out more artistic shots, but it seems most the photos these days are of the dogs, and they don’t ever end up artistic past a point. Thanks for stopping by.

I also LOVE that second picture–similar to the first, but so much more evocative for some reason. I would hang that on my living room wall in a heartbeat. Beautiful work!!

Thank you so much, makes me happy to hear something is wall worthy in someone else’s house. I love to shoot flowers, I really need to make an effort to get back to it. I have lots of photos up on my SmugMug (found through my portfolio link on Main page, or click link on Buy page) where you are more than welcome to order prints of anything I have on there. Let me know if you don’t see a size you were thinking of.
Thanks again for the nice comment

  5. I’m with you on the dof comparison… I too would go with the second shot because of its simplicity… And the vibrant colours you’ve captured are amazing…
It’s so difficult to decide on the perfect depth with macro though don’t you think.. I usually end up taking a number of shots at different f stops just to be sure I have all the bases covered..

Thanks for the comment, constructive comments are more than welcome. I agree the DOF can be a challenge with a true macro lens, it’s driven me nuts many a time, but I think it was responsible for me really learning to understand how Aperture works, which I greatly appreciate.

  6. Gorgeous photos! I love that you included the info at the bottom of the photos. We are doing our best to learn more about photography and knowing what settings you used is very helpful!

P.S. Thanks for your kind words about Gus. He has steps up to the bed, but we’re definitely going to limit his jumping onto the sofa going forward!

    • Anna says:

Yeah I’m normally not one to list settings, but I will try and do it more often especially for more complicated scenes etc. Let me know if you ever have any questions, I don’t know everything about cameras but I will share if I do know the answer lol.

Keep us posted on Gus, it’s no fun when you know your pup is in pain. Strange it hasn’t happened much before. But hey I have a slipped disc in my back so I know how he feels, and who knows what caused it, sometimes just stepping off a curb wrong can do it.
      Take care

what gorgeous macros! [i really would love to see these colors in fabrics/yarns, too. :o)]

    • Anna says:

Thank you! Yes wouldn’t that be wonderful to see these in fabrics or yarns? Who can we talk to about this? We could make a Lily Blanket.

  8. Those are beautiful! The last one is my favorite.

  9. Love these! Such beautiful colors and DOF.

  10. This happens to be my favorite lily in the whole wide world. Great choice for a close-up!
